Understanding Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Learning Disabilities (LD)

Updated: Oct 18, 2021

Thanks to those of you who tuned into Clubhouse yesterday at 4pm.

Great conversations! We had a number of key professionals and parents join in and ask questions:

The questions focussed on:

- Help to better understand and support Autistic children and adults.

- Challenges in communicating with autistic patients in hospitals and care homes

- How to support communication and better understand needs

We talked about the need for collecting key information at intake to ensure nurses are familiar with the child's routine and preferred ways of communication. The use of visuals such as PECS and now and then boards.

-a care support worker working with a 22 year old autistic young woman asked for support in managing "challenging behaviours." The young person was about to be moved into a home with other service users and there were concerns about how she would cope with this.

In all the cases key themes were:

- The need for support in understanding autism and how it manifests

- Managing and dealing with sensory issues, anxiety and supporting self-regulation

- Facilitating communication through the use of visuals including PECS

- Helping young people to adjust to their new environment

- The importance of transition planning and preparing them for change.

We were also joined by a teacher working in mainstream school and by a parent.

It is unfortunate that training programmes such as nursing and teaching courses do not seem to include sufficient lectures on SEND and LD, resulting in nurses and teachers feeling unprepared for working with children and young people with SEND and LD.

Interested to hear your comments on all this and more.

Hope you can join in the conversation next Sunday at 4pm BST
