Allyship and why it's so important to speak up.

Please check out this video on speaking up and allyship- so insightful and to the point. Staying silent is no longer an option. We need to be brave enough to speak up and be prepared to tolerate the discomfort which often comes with this.

It's not enough to say I am not racist and then sit in silence when we witness discrimination and racism. We have to be actively anti- racist.

As Nick Crasner says we have to focus on "doing diversity' and not just talking about it.

Thanks to Inezilona Maselino for thinking of me when she saw this video and sharing it. She said, "I have a feeling this short clip will interest you" So true!

Paul Scanlon states that keeping silent is a social code which is used to protect privilege. We become complicit. "Our silence is not benign, it is continuing the problem."

This social code is more powerful in certain professions than others. I remember writing about this last year in a my letter to white psychologists entitled "let us breathe".

Paul Scanlon's messages resonate with some of the messages in my forthcoming book on Understanding and Dealing with Everyday Racism. Yes the book is finally coming out shortly! Currently choosing book covers!! More details to follow.
